April 26, 2021 – What happens in Washington doesn’t stay in Washington, and upcoming webinars will examine two of the areas most critical to healthcare marketing and communications: the use of personal data and protecting privacy, and what’s ahead for the FDA under new leadership.
Registration is now open here for the two webinar programs, which are sponsored by the Coalition for Healthcare Communication.
The first webinar, “Data Privacy and Security: Is Federal Regulation Ahead?” is scheduled for May 12 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. ET, and will feature Alison Pepper, executive vice president, Government Relations at the 4A’s. Marketers’ data capabilities are increasing even as concern about privacy grows and a backlash against “big tech” sweeps through Washington and state capitals. A push for federal regulation of data privacy and security was set aside last year during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, but California and Virginia have passed comprehensive regulation and other states are considering bills, posing the risk that marketers will need to negotiate a maze of different rules in different jurisdictions.
Pepper, a longtime follower of data privacy issues in Washington, will discuss the positions of the Biden administration, key Senators, and individual industry groups, and will share what federal regulation would likely include. She also will review what healthcare marketers should know about the state laws on privacy and digital advertising taxes.
The second webinar, “FDA Update: New Leadership, Initiatives and Challenges,” is scheduled for June 4 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. ET, and will feature Kate Rawson, senior editor of Prevision Policy. The FDA is still dealing with product reviews and policies related to COVID-19, plus a growing backlog of manufacturing inspections and initiatives to apply lessons from the pandemic to other aspects of drug approvals, clinical trial guidance, and regulation of pharmaceutical promotion. Rawson also will also shed light on the selection process for the next FDA Commissioner and what President Biden and Congress expect from the new leader.
“We’re delighted to present Alison Pepper and Kate Rawson in the Coalition’s continuing series of webinars on policy topics of highest interest to the health communications and marketing industry,” said Coalition Executive Director Jon Bigelow. “Both are experts in their field and engaging speakers. And few topics are as critically important in health communications as appropriate protection for data, and the FDA’s role in approving new prescription drugs and regulating what manufacturers may or may not say about those medicines.”
