Coalition Co-founder Harry Sweeney Supports Free Speech in WSJ Letter to the Editor

May 29, 2013 – Harry Sweeney, retired co-founder of the Coalition for Healthcare Communication, recently sent a Letter to the Editor of The Wall Street Journal stating that the government is flaunting First Amendment constitutional rights, which forces the regulated “to engage in lengthy, expensive resistance, which in turn increases the costs of doing business and picks the pockets of the American public.”

Sweeney wrote to the paper in response to both its editorial cheap celebrex on the Associated Press subpoenas and an op-ed piece on campus speech. He noted that during his tenure at the Coalition, he has “lived with FDA and HHS bureaucratic overreach,” and stated that the power of the government to restrict speech can be damaging. “It is a calculated, direct attack on the fabric of our Constitution. Set against the backdrop of the latest ‘perfect storm’ of federal scandals involving communications failures, it should be a wake-up call for us all,” Sweeney said.
